Joey began his motorsports career in Southern California with amateur motocross at age eleven.  After several seasons of motocross, Joey built his first off-road truck and began learning to drive in the dirt.  

In December 2011, Joey started racing karts at the Jim Hall Kart Racing School in Southern California.  

In March of 2012 he moved into regional kart races with the PSL SoCal CRG Kart team - winning the Los Angeles Karting Championship (LAKC) Dominic Dobson award for Rookie of the Year.  

Joey's first experience in open wheel cars came that same year at the

Allen Berg Racing School in Fontana, California.  In 2013 Joey began racing Formula F1600 in the Pacific Formula F1600 Championship Series with PR1 Motorsports, finishing the series second overall.  
In September 2013, Joey was selected as a Team USA Scholarship winner, and with that honor represented the US in competition at the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch and the Walter Hayes Cup at Silverstone Raceway, England.  In late 2013, Joey won the West Coast National Auto Sport Association (NASA) Teen Mazda Challenge and went on to win the 2013 Mazda Club Racer Shootout and the prize of a season fully funded by Mazda Motorsports.

In his rookie year in the SCCA Pro Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup series Joey earned a podium finish, three top-fives and finished fifth overall.  

In 2015, Joey raced in the SCCA Mazda MX-5 Cup, Pro Mazda Championship presented by Cooper Tires and the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series Pro Lite class.
